2011 Summer Series (Completed) |
The 2011 summer
series took place
at Spring Lake on Sunday afternoons May 15, June 12, July 10, August
14, and September 11. There were 3 races per day, starting at 1:00
P.M. Note that we used the High Scoring System described in the
Notice of Race. Thus, a score of 5 for a given race means that the
skipper finished first (on corrected time) in a field of 5 boats for
that race.

Race Day #1, May 15, 2011
The day began with hail in Santa Rosa. When the skippers started arriving, it was quite blustery but the sky was clearing. With one capsize before the first race started and another right after the start, it certainly was an eventful day. Two skippers shortened sail, with one shaking out his reef during the third race. There was a self-timing fault on races 2 and 3, with the winner decided by all the skippers. Thanks to Rebecca's husband Jeff for timing the first race and to their 3-year-old daughter for making everyone smile.
Race Day #2, June 12, 2011
Great sailing weather - - wind, sunshine, warm temperatures. We couldn't convince the Capri 14.2 or the Snark on the Lake to join the races, but kayaks, canoes, a stand-up paddler, and a swimmer (!) shared Spring Lake with us. The second race was won by only 9 seconds (corrected time). The BBQ with pulled-pork and home-brewed beer by Steve was a wonderful finish to the race day. Join us in July!
Race Day #3, July 10, 2011
Another great day on Spring Lake. The racing was very interesting, with three skippers choosing one side of the island on the “downwind” leg and three skippers choosing the other side! Of course, the wind filled in as we were finishing the last race!
Race Day #4, August 14, 2011
Good weather. Good sailing. Doug Howson timed the races.
Race Day #5, September 11, 2011
What a great day of sailing on Spring Lake. The final day of the Summer Series brought out seven sailors to a light wind overcast day. Fluky breezes challenged everyone all day. Light air long races favor the low handicaps and Jim Smith was no exception. Coming in with a second and a first for the day, for second highest points for the day. "Light air" Charlie Dotti brought home the high score of the day; with an exceptional start on the last race and never looked back. Wallace tied for third for the day with Doug. Must have been good karma; the wind seemed to always be near Wallace. Steve could only manage one second place, but that was enough to put him into first place for the series. Series placers, Jim with second and Brian with the third, all sailed a hard fought battle. Special thanks to Gail who got off work too late to get her boat; but came to the lake and offered to be be race committee.
